A bust of Former Slovenian President and Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek was unveiled on Friday in his hometown of Zagorje in central Slovenia. Zagorje Mayor Matjaz Svagan said at the ceremony that Drnovsek "had given his life for independent Slovenia, which is today one of the most successful countries in Europe".
Svagan said that the town decided to erect the bust because it loved Drnovsek and because he said many times that Zagorje gave him positive energy, strength and vision, and that he was proud he came from this part of Slovenia.
Svagan thanked Drnovsek for everything he had done for Slovenia and emphasised that today was the day of great words, as acts had been already made by Drnovsek. He added that the late president was his political role model and the "father of the Zagorje valley".
Today's ceremony was also attended by Prime Minister Janez Jansa, who said that his predecessor at the post of the prime minister deserved such a recognition. He added that Drnovsek should be definitely credited for Slovenia's development, especially "because he insisted on Slovenia's way towards EU and NATO".
The bust was unveiled despite the calls of Drnovsek's family against good-intentioned but inappropriate and uncontrolled use of Drnovsek's name, which were also joined by President Danilo Tuerk. Drnovsek's family was not present at the ceremony.
