Slovenian hauilers passing through Italy will no longer be asked to produce CEMT permits, the Transport Ministry confirmed on Friday. Following protest from the hauilers and the ministry, the Italian transport minister has received a revised interpretation of a relevant EU regulation and has called on Italian authorities to stop issuing fines.
Italian police has been fining Slovenia hauliers on their way to a third country with up to EUR 13,000 for the failure to produce CEMPT permits.
This prompted protests and an intervention from the European Commission, which confirmed Slovenia's view on how the EU regulation on CEMPT permits is to be interpreted.
The Slovenian Transport Ministry said it had already told the responsible authorities in Italy in December 2006 that CEMT permits were not necessary in such cases, while Transport Minister Radovan Zerjav recently also addressed a letter to his Italian Colleague Altero Matteoli, calling on him to help solve the matter as soon as possible.
