New Czech Donation for ITF Work in Bosnia-Herzegovina

Ig, 17 July

The Slovenian-run International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance (ITF) received the 11th donation of the Czech Republic on Thursday, as an agreement on a EUR 84,810 donation was signed by Czech Ambassador Ivana Hlavsova and the fund's international cooperation adviser Iztok Hocevar.

The money will be spent for demining an area of over 32,000 sq. meters of the village Kolimer near Tuzla in Bosnia-Herzegovina and for the mine victims' assistance programme carried out by the NGO Eco Sport Group from Bosnia-Herzegovina, ITF said on Thursday. The demined land will be used for agriculture.
The Czech Republic is one of ITF's regular donors and has donated almost EUR 470,000 since the ITF was founded in 1998.
Eleven people have been killed and 13 have been wounded in eight mine accidents in Bosnia-Herzegovina in the first half of 2008 alone. According to the Bosnian Mine Action Centre (BH MAC), there are still more than 85m square meters of mine-infested land in and around Tuzla.
Eco Sport Group has been helping mine victims in Bosnia-Herzegovina for ten years and combines psychophysical rehabilitation, sports, and education trying to return the victims to an equal position in society.
In ten years, the ITF has raised around EUR 160m with which it demined more than 90 sq. kilometres of land in SE Europe and helped more than a thousand mine victims in rehabilitation centres through different rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
