Ministers Say Road Safety Improving
Safety on Slovenian roads has improved since the introduction of amendments to the road safety act in April, Transport Minister Radovan Zerjav said on Tuesday.
Compared to 2007, eight fewer died on the roads in May this year, while in June 17 lives were saved, Zerjav said.
In the first half of 2008, 101 people were killed on Slovenian roads, 33 less than in the same period last year and the lowest figure since 1991.
In June there were 1,508 accidents, the lowest monthly figure since Slovenia gained independence, he added.
Zerjav also announced new awareness-raising campaigns. In October the "Be Careful" campaign will address pedestrians, which will be followed by a campaign aimed at improving safety at level crossings.
Zerjav is not completely satisfied with safety at level crossings, even though the number of accident victims at the crossings halved compared to last year.
Interior Minister Dragutin Mate meanwhile said that the police will increase their presence on the roads during the tourist season.
According to Mate, 1,727 people were injured in accidents in June 2007, while the number stood at 886 this year.
