Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa has told the European Parliament that synergy between Slovenia's presidency of the EU, the European Commission and European Parliament enabled the bloc to make headway.
Addressing Tuesday's extraordinary session of the European Parliament, Jansa said that this "headway that we have achieved proves that Europe is dynamic, that it works and that it is capable of dealing with challenges".
Jansa made his statements as part of a presentation of Slovenia's six-month EU presidency, which ends next Monday. Slovenia had made "Si.nergy for Europe" the motto of its presidency.
The incumbent president of the European Council thanked the presidents of the European Commission and European Parliament for their efforts in working with the Slovenian presidency.
"Without it the presidency would have been much more difficult. This was strategic help, thank you for it, for the good communication and cooperation, especially after the Irish referendum, when the times were tough politically," Jansa said.
President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Poettering returned the gratitude, thanking Jansa and European Affairs State Secretary Janez Lenarcic on the "excellent presidency, one of the most friendly so far".
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso assessed that the June summit was a success despite the difficult political situation, saying this was in large part due to the able Slovenian presidency.
