Government Adopts Climate Change Strategy for Agriculture

Ljubljana, 18 June

The government adopted on Wednesday a strategy on the adaptation of Slovenia's agriculture and forestry to climate change. Agriculture Minister Iztok Jarc told the press that the aim was to mitigate the damaging effects of climate change in a cost-effective manner.

The strategy consists of five basic pillars, one of them being education, the raising of awareness and giving out advice, Jarc said.
The remaining pillars focus on preserving and obtaining new knowledge about climate change; on strengthening the capabilities to adapt the agriculture and forestry; on measures of agriculture and forestry policy and changes to the existing legislation; and on facilitating international cooperation.
According to Jarc, the strategy presents a switch from treatment to prevention.
The next step will be the drawing up of an action plan for the implementation of the strategy, which will contain specific measures and activities. The plan is expected to be ready by the end of this year.
The government has allocated around EUR 8m for the implementation of the strategy in 2009, EUR 10m for 2010, and EUR 15m in 2011.
