Slovenia and other countries of the Western Balkans are too small as independent tourist markets, which is why they have to present themselves to potential foreign investors as a region, stressed the speakers opening the Investment Conference 2008 in Nova Gorica on Monday.
The two-day conference, organised jointly by the English language paper Slovenia Times and the Public Agency for Entrepreneurship and Foreign Investment (JAPTI), is devoted to the presentation of investment opportunities in the Western Balkans, with an emphasis on tourism.
"Tourism is the forte of this area. At the same time tourism is the most dynamic thing and it provides the most opportunities for investment," Slovenia Times director Brane Krajnik explained the choice of the topic for the conference, which is expected to attract around 150 participants.
"Slovenian tourism has been developing very well in recent years and we need foreign investors for further development. In cooperation with the remaining countries in the region we are a more interesting partner for foreign investors," Marjan Hribar of the Economy Ministry tourism directorate told the press.
Only a joint effort brings success and foreign investment is of key importance for the development of the Western Balkans, added JAPTI director Peter Jesovnik.
As many as 70% of the visitors at the conference, taking place for the second time, are expected to come from abroad. The aim is to provide them with more details on local projects, Krajnik explained.
