PM Says EU Moving Forward in His Invitation to Summit

Brussels, 17 June

Prime Minister Janez Jansa has sent an invitation to EU heads of state and government for the upcoming EU Summit. "After the Irish NO to the Lisbon Treaty it is important to show that the EU is moving forward and that it will remain on the path of development," Jansa said in the invitation.

The meeting of EU leaders will start in Brussels on Thursday with a discussion on Slovakia's entry into the eurozone, which will also be attended by European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet.
According to Jansa, the current chair of the European Council, the first working meeting of the summit, dedicated to high prices of oil and food, is to follow. It is expected to discuss the consequences of high food and oil prices and bring decisions on short-, mid- and long-term measures.
"Considering that the recent months have been marked with record prices of food in the last fifteen years, it is our task to show the way forward," Jansa said.
The Lisbon Treaty will then be discussed at a working dinner. "First we will ask our Irish counterpart Brian Cowen to explain the reasons for the rejection of the treaty in the Irish referendum," Jansa said.
The EU foreign ministers will also have a working dinner which will focus on the Western Balkans. The progress of the countries of the region was put forward as one of the five priorities of Slovenia's EU presidency.
The June summit will continue on Friday morning when the EU heads of state and government will polish up the conclusions of the summit, the final meeting under the Slovenian presidency.
The conclusions will contain topics from the area of justice and internal affairs and economic, social and environmental topics.
