Maribor Airport Renamed after Slovenian Aviation Pioneer
Maribor Airport will from Saturday on be officially known as the Edvard Rusjan Airport as Slovenia's second largest airport was renamed today. The airport got its new name after the first Slovenian aviator.
Transport Minister Radovan Zerjav, who stepped in as the main speaker after Prime Minister Janez Jansa cancelled his appearance on Friday, said that Slovenia's EU presidency was producing excellent results in the field of air transports.
The presidency efforts resulted in the European Commission being given the authorisation for talks with Israel, Australia and New Zealand on concluding comprehensive air transport agreements.
The presidency also successfully organised the formal launch of the second phase of open skies talks with the US, while the airport tax directive will also be adopted.
The ceremony was held at the sidelines of the ongoing International Air Show Maribor '08. The decision to rename the airport was adopted by the government in February.
The call for the name change was submitted by the airport's operator Aerodrom Maribor and is meant to honour the achievements of the Rusjan brothers, especially Edvard (1886-1911).
The airport submitted the application because 2008 marks the centenary of the brothers' first model aeroplane, while in 2009 it will be 100 years since Edvard Rusjan's first flight.
