Italian, Slovenian Nuclear Experts Call for Cooperation
A team of Italian nuclear experts visited Slovenia on Thursday to discuss the recent leak of a coolant at the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant (NEK). The Italian team commended Slovenia for rapid sharing of information about the leak that prompted a Europe-wide scare.
Andrej Stritar, the boss of the Slovenian nuclear watchdog, said the teams also agreed that the entire European alert and information network in such cases should be reconsidered, as the media reaction to the leak was completely overstated.
The team from the Italian Environment Protection and Technical Services Agency (APAT) and their Slovenian counterparts from the Nuclear Safety Administration also discussed restarting talks to sign an agreement on cooperation in similar events.
The Italian team is to visit NEK on Friday.
NEK was brought to a shutdown last Wednesday due to a leak in the primary cooling system. The power plant was brought back online and reconnected to the power grid on Monday after technicians replaced a faulty valve and the Nuclear Safety Administration decided the power plant was fit for re-launch.
