Transport Minister Radovan Zerjav and Interior Minister Dragutin Mate told the press on Wednesday that the new road safety act, which introduced much stiffer fines, achieved its goal - a reduction in the number of traffic accidents.
The bill entered into force at the end of April and in May 15 people died in car crashes, ten less than the month before. Some 90 people died in traffic accidents in Slovenia since January, while in the same period last year there were 113 casualties.
Mate expressed his hope that the positive effects of the road safety act would be sustained so that Slovenia would reach its goal of reducing the number of deaths to less than 205 a year.
"Improved road safety is the result of different measures which have been planned and carried out on the local, regional and national level," Zerjav said.
Mate said that police had detained an enormous number of drink drivers with over 0.11% of blood alcohol this year, some 100 each weekend.
The police confiscated 270 vehicles this year, while only 104 vehicles were confiscated last year, said Mate.
