Polish writer, poet, essayist, and literary critic Andrzej Stasiuk is the winner of the 2008 Vilenica Award for literature, the Slovenian Writers' Association (DSP) announced on Thursday.
The award will be presented at the 23th Vilenica international writers' meeting, which will take place in the beginning of September at a number of venues around Slovenia.
The 14-strong jury selected Stasiuk for his unique literary sensitivity and "his charming, persuasive fiction, both a paean to our corner of the world and an easy renunciation of 'Western Europe's golden towers'".
This year's festival will feature over 60 authors, academics, editors, publishers, and cultural managers from Central Europe and other countries, including names such as Macedonian playwright Goran Stefanovski (last year's laureate), Cuban writer Zoe Valdes, Chinese poet Lian Yang, Ukrainian author Jurij Andruhovic and Lithuanian writer Tomas Venclova.
The main theme of the meet will be writing as a literary and sociological category, which is also reflected in the festival's motto "Who Is Writing?".
The festival pay special focus on contemporary Lithuanian literature, following last year's presentation of Irish authors.
