Week of Cultural and Political Events Underway in Ljubljana
A series of cultural and political events entitled EuroGlobe kicks off in Ljubljana on Saturday. The events, taking place at Sentjakobsko theatre and Metelkova alternative arts centre, will promote European culture and discussions on topical EU issues.
The project consists of three parts; the first one will be dedicated to arts and culture, the second will involve workshops and debates on EU issues, and the third part will feature a rap contest and a poetry slam, said the project's coordinator Peter Matjasic.
Daniel Dettling, the director of the EuroGlobe project, which is touring European capitals, said EuroGlobe was also a contribution to the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009.
He pointed out that culture was a crucial segment of a democratic society and highlighted the importance of public debate, which is what the project promotes.
EuroGlobe is based on the principle of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, where interaction with the audience was placed at the centre of the happening. Similarly, interaction, cooperation and mutual communication are needed among the EU members, said Norbert Kentrup of the German theatre group Shakespeare und Partners, which is to appear on stage.
The project, aimed at promoting discussions about Europe's past, present and future in all member states, will continue its journey in Strasbourg and in Prague.
