Palestinian universities Birzeit and An-Najah signed an agreement during the visit of a Slovenian delegation on the West Bank on Monday to cooperate in the creation of a Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI) in Slovenia.
A delegation of the Slovenian Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology is visiting Israel and the Palestinian territories this week.
On Monday, the Slovenian officials presented the EMUNI project to Palestinian Education and Higher Education Minister Lamis al-Alami and invited her to attend the signing of the agreement establishing the university in Portoroz on 9 June.
The Palestinian minister expressed her support for the project, the Slovenian Higher Education Ministry said in a press release.
Al-Alami also emphasised the importance of international cooperation, quality higher education and the need for citizens to attain the highest possible education level.
The Slovenian delegation also visited the Palestinian Birzeit University, where it met the heads of the two most respectable Palestinian universities, President of Birzeit Nabeel Kassis and President of An-Najah Rami Hamdallah.
After talks, Nada Trunk Sirca, who is responsible for the project in Slovenia, signed an agreement on cooperation on the Euro-Mediterranean University with both university officials.
The Slovenian delegation will also visit Israeli universities that are already involved in the project on Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to the release from the ministry, the talks will focus on student and professor exchange programmes between EMUNI and the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, University of Haifa, Galilee College and Western Galilee College.
