Rich Summer Festival Season to Kick Off in May

Ljubljana, 1 May

Slovenia will in the summer again be awash with music festivals featuring all types of music from jazz, to pop and metal. A jazz festival in the north western town of Cerkno will open the season in May.

The 13th international jazz festival in Cerkno is to take place between 15 and 17 May and is to host nine ensembles performing different styles of jazz, such as a Bosnian trio playing traditional "sevdalinke" love songs with a touch of jazz.
Only three days after the Cerkno jazz festival, the 24th Druga godba festival of world music is to kick off in Ljubljana. The eight-day event will feature performances by the British post-punk band Gang of Four, the cult Ojos de Brujo Sound System from Spain as well as afro-pop Orchestra Baobab from Senegal and reggae performer Tiken Jah Fakoly from Cote d'Ivoire.
A novelty at the festival will be a Romani hip hop evening with performers from Macedonia, the Czech Republic and Slovenia. Nawal, an acclaimed singer from the Comoro islands is to deliver an overture to the festival on 13 May, while the French electro gypsy swing Caravan Palace is to give the audience an aftertaste of the festival on 14 July.
The two-day Blues Postojna festival, which is to start on 12 June at the appealing venue just outside the monumental Postojna cave, will feature six jazz performers from Europe and the US.
Between 27 and 29 June, the legendary rock festival Rock Otocec is to host a world famous band, however, it is currently unknown which. The event will also feature popular Slovenian bands such as Pankrti, Niet, Siddharta and the Slovenian-Croatian Jinx, only to name a few.
The Italian ska-jazz artist Roy Paci Aretuska is to open the 49th Ljubljana Jazz Festival on 30 June. The four-day festival will feature the French Manu Katche Playground Project, The Bad Plus from the US and many more.
The 5th Metal Camp, taking place between 3 and 9 July, will meanwhile feature some 50 bands performing on the main stage, while the smaller stage will host less known bands. The star guest of the festival will be Sweden's In Flames.
In mid July, the 5th Soca Reggae Riversplash is to warm the cool Soca river with stars like Michael Rose and a rising star of the European reggae scene, Italy's Alborosie.
