The government adopted on Friday the bill on mental health, which will serve as basis for the national programme for the protection of mental health.
The law defines the rights of mental patients in cases of forced hospitalisation and introduces patients' representatives in such cases, Health Minister Zofija Mazej Kukovic said.
According to her, the bill aims to raise awareness about mental illnesses and the need for reintegrating mental patients into society.
It also defines special methods of treatment. The bill was drafted in cooperation with the Justice Ministry and and the Labour, Family and Social Affairs Ministry.
Its implementation will cost EUR 5m, which will come from the Health Ministry's budget.
Mazej Kukovic noted today that Slovenia has been without a mental health law for 15 years.
