Evaluation Commission Praises Maribor Universiade Bid
A delegation of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) which has visited venues in and around Maribor that are to host the Winter Universiade in 2013 on Wednesday expressed full support for the only candidate for the event.
"Not only is Maribor well prepared, the future organisers will find it hard to follow your standards," the head of the FISU Evaluation Commission Leonz Eder said in Maribor.
He added that the commission would propose to the FISU Executive Board to "support Maribor's candidacy". The vote is scheduled for 31 May, in Brussels.
"I think we are ready to host the event even now and we expect a positive decision from the FISU board," Maribor Mayor Franc Kangler said. The estimated cost of the event is EUR 252.6m, including the infrastructure.
Slovenia's second largest city vied to host the 2011 Winter Universiade, but its bid was defeated by Turkey's Erzurum in the vote in Turin on 16 January 2007.
Even then the Evaluation Commission was full of praise for Maribor's bid. An important advantage for Maribor this time is that it has no rival.
