Senior officials for trade and investment from EU and Asian countries have called for progress in negotiations on free trade agreements between the two regions at a two-day meeting in Slovenia's Maribor. They exchanged views regarding some global issues and called for liberalisation of world trade.
The meeting as part the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) dialogue, which started on Tuesday, was an introduction to the ASEM ministerial which is to take place in Indonesia in June, the Economy Ministry said on Thursday.
The officials exchanged views on economic cooperation between the regions, focusing on ways for enhancing it and removing barriers to free trade and investment.
They expressed commitment to efforts for progress in the negotiations for free trade agreements and liberalisation of world trade, which were initiated by the World Trade Organisation.
At the meeting, Slovenia presented its experience and the advantages of EU enlargement in terms of economy. The officials also analysed the influence of the Lisbon Treaty on the EU trade policy towards third countries, the economic integration of East and South Asia and the cooperation between European and Asian companies, the ministry said.
