Culture Minister Coauthors Slovenian History Book in German

Ljubljana, 15 April

Slovenia's Culture Minister Vasko Simoniti is one of the three historians who wrote the first comprehensive overview of the Slovenian history in a foreign language.

The "Slowenische Geschichte: Gesellschaft - Politik - Kultur (Slovenian History: Society - Politics - Culture)" is a milestone for Slovenian history, coauthor Peter Vodopivec said.
The book was actually created by combining a previous work by Simoniti and historian Peter Stih dealing with Slovenian history until the Enlightenment and Vodopivec's book that shed light on the time between the Enlightenment and Slovenia's independence, the authors told the press upon presenting the book in Ljubljana on Tuesday.
According to Stih, the outcome is a kind of compendium, but the authors were lucky that the book reads as a whole and that differences between the three authors are not felt. This is so to a large degree because the whole book was translated by a single translator, believes Stih.
The book does not focus solely on politics, but also tries to present the social, economic and cultural trends up to 2004. While its first part focusing on the period until the end of the 18th century deals mainly with the area in which Slovenians lived, the second part closes in on people who considered themselves Slovenians.
According to Simoniti, the book has been received well in Austria and Germany, where it has practically sold out.
