Composer Globokar in Focus of Slovenian Music Festival

The Slovenian Music Days, a festival dedicated to Slovenian composers of contemporary music, will this year focus on the works of avant-garde composer Vinko Globokar, including his best known work "Angel zgodovine" (Angel of History), a three-part concerto for two orchestras and two conductors.

The 23rd annual festival, which is to run from Monday through Thursday, is to get underway with a concert by the symphony orchestra of the national broadcaster RTV Slovenija. A number of concerts are to follow in the Slovenian Philharmonic Hall, the organisers have told the press.
The festival will end on Thursday with the national premiere of "Angel zgodovine". The piece will be performed by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by France's Diego Masson and Germany's Michael Wendeberg, while live electronic effects will be provided by the Experimental Studio Freiburg.
Globokar's best-known piece focuses on the fall of democracy and the horrors of war that are triggered by them. Globokar, 73, told the press he wanted to construct a sound fresco of the early 21st century.
The work cannot be performed in a concert hall because the orchestras have to be placed at different ends of the venue, and the audience is seated unconventionally. "They only have to turn their heads, and they can see the other orchestra," he said.
The Slovenian Music Days are organised by festival organiser Ljubljana Festival, in cooperation with the Symphony Orchestra of RTV Slovenija, the Slovenian Philharmonics, and the Slovenian Composers' Society.
This year's event will include four concerts and the International Musicological Symposium, which will be held in the Ljubljana City Museum from Monday to Thursday and will focus on 20th century music. According to the symposium chair Primoz Kuret, 25 experts from 10 European countries will be taking part.
