Slovenia's Nareks Wins Bronze at Judo Champs

Lisbon, 11 April

Slovenian judoka Petra Nareks won bronze in the up to 52 kg category at the European Judo Championships in Lisbon on Friday. However, her sixth medal at European Championships was not enough to secure her a berth at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Nareks would have had to compete in the finals if she wanted to get a place at the Olympics, but lost the first match against Romania's Ioana Maria Aluas Dinea. She then went on to defeat three subsequent competitors to win the bronze.
"This is my sixth medal at the European Championships. I'm very pleased with it...I knew I had to win gold or silver in order to make it to Beijing, but for me the true loser is the one who falls down and fails to get up again."
