Education Minister Calls for More Creativity
A conference promoting innovation and creativity in education rounded off at Brdo pri Kranju on Thursday. "If Europe wants to stay one step ahead of the most developed regions, creativity must become a way of life," stressed Education Minister Milan Zver at the close of the conference.
Jan Figel, European Commissioner responsible for education, training, culture and youth, meanwhile expressed hopes for the European Institute of Technology (EIT) to be established before the end of Slovenian presidency. There are many reasons to support innovation, he told the press.
A creative and innovative society incorporates technology, tolerance and talent, Figel said. Information and communication technologies enable better learning; modernisation of school systems is a prerequisite for better development of talents, and tolerance ensures equal opportunities and inclusion to everyone, including the minorities.
"It is up to the family, school, society and state to create systems, legislation and atmosphere that encourage inclusion, tolerance in innovation," stressed Figel.
Minister Zver meanwhile underlined the importance of organising such a conference. It highlighted one of the key challenges European societies face, especially if they are to keep track with other developed regions, he said.
"There are at least three conditions necessary for this; an autonomous school, an autonomous teacher and an autonomous student," said Zver.
The education minister also backed the initiative to declare 2009 the European Year of Creativity and Innovation, adding he wished the initiative would not to target only education, but also other European areas.
