Linden Trees Create New "Avenue of Europe" at Brdo

Brdo pri Kranju, 12 April

Top environment officials from the EU, candidate countries and EFTA members planted an avenue of 34 linden trees at the Brdo estate on Saturday, in what was a symbolic culmination of the informal meeting of EU environment ministers and a message of the importance of trees for the environment.

The planting of the "Tree-Lined Avenue of Europe" was designed to encourage European citizens to plant their own trees and contribute to the protection of the environment, according to the initiators of the event, the Slovenian Association of Eco-Schools.
Despite a heavy downpour, the heads of 34 delegations attending the meeting planted a linden tree each. "May this action be a symbol of coexistence between man and nature," Slovenian Environment Minister Janez Podobnik said.
The event is a continuation of the traditional planting of trees to mark the 22 April World Earth Day. In 2006, students from 30 schools planted 80 trees and last year students from 46 schools took part in the planting of 200 trees.
