President Danilo Tuerk and Jordanian King Abdallah II agreed on Tuesday that relations between the countries were good and that Slovenia and Jordan should bolster ties, especially in business, as they met at Brdo pri Kranju. The pair also discussed the situation in the Middle East.
Tuerk said that Slovenia appreciated Jordan's contribution to peace, stability and development in the Middle East, and the global contribution that the country provides within the framework of the UN and otherwise.
Tuerk added that the situation in the Middle East was worrying, however one should never give up hope. He expressed confidence in Jordan and Abdallah II's capability, creativity, good will and international reputation.
Abdallah II meanwhile said that the Slovenian president and Slovenia were currently in a unique situation in the EU and that the bloc could play a key role in bringing closer partners for peace in the region.
He added that there were many challenges in the region, quoting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Lebanon.
Touching on cooperation between the two countries, Tuerk said Slovenia and Jordan always advocated the same positions regarding the Balkan wars, especially the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He added that both countries sincerely strove for peace and for the truth about the war to be told.
The pair agreed that economic cooperation between the countries could be bolstered. Tuerk highlighted the possibility of utilising the Slovenian port of Koper by Jordan. The pair also discussed the possibility of signing new agreements.
According to Tuerk, the countries could cooperate in numerous areas, also in the establishment of the Euro-Mediterranean University.
Abdallah II also met Prime Minister Janez Jansa, the president of the European Council, who thanked Jordan for its support for the Slovenian initiative to set up a Euro-Mediterranean university as a concrete project in the Barcelona Process.
Talking about the Middle East, the pair voiced the desire for the continuation of the peace process, according to the prime minister's office.
King Abdallah II, accompanied by Queen Rania, visited Slovenia as part of a tour that started in France and will take them to Austria on Wednesday.
