Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa and Alexei Miller, CEO of the Russian gas producer Gazprom, discussed in Ljubljana on Friday energy safety in Europe and the world, the prime minister's office said. Gazprom meanwhile said the talks concerned the South Stream project.
The pair also discussed options to cooperate in providing gas supply and in outlining new transport routes.
Jansa and Miller agreed that there were good foundations for strengthening ties between Slovenian and Russian companies in that respect, the office added.
Gazprom was somewhat more detailed about the talks, writing in a press release on its website that Jansa and Miller discussed "Slovenia's possible participation in the South Stream project".
South Stream is a planned gas pipeline for transporting Russian natural gas to Italy. It complements another Russian-backed project, Nord Stream, which will link Russia and the EU across the Baltic Sea.
The EU, supported by the US, meanwhile put most of its weight behind the Nabucco pipeline, which should transport natural gas from Turkey to Austria. Nabucco is seen as the EU's bid to lessen its energy dependence on Russia.
