Agriculture Minister Talks Cooperation in Romania

Bucharest, 11 April

Agriculture Minister Iztok Jarc and his Romanian counterpart Dacian Ciolos discussed cooperation between their ministries and countries' agricultural sectors on Friday, as Jarc started a two-day visit to Romania. The pair agreed that cooperation between the countries was good and that it would be strengthened in the future.

Ciolos told Jarc that he wanted cooperation in management of mountain areas and areas where conditions for farming were limited, Jernej Kovac of the Agriculture Ministry told the press.
Romania also wants stronger cooperation in exchanging experience on implementation of agriculture-environmental measures and phytosanitary control.
The Slovenian ministry already participates in education and training of Romanian farm payments agency.
The ministers also touched upon the EU's common agricultural policy. For Romania it is important that the single payment scheme is kept at least until 2013. The country also wants the cross compliance rules to be simplified.
Romania welcomed the decision on a 2% increase of milk quotas in the EU, it however stressed that measures should be examined that would preserve the production of milk in areas where abolishment of quotas in 2015 would result in its abandoning.
Agriculture is one of the most important sectors in Romania, generating 12% of the country's GDP. Some 32% of Romania's active population work in forestry and agriculture.
In 2006, Slovenia exported to Romania EUR 2.17m worth of agriculture and food products and imported EUR 3.3m worth of such goods from there.
