The 38th Week of Slovenian Drama will start at the Kranj-based Presernovo gledalisce theatre on Tuesday, featuring 16 plays, eight of which will be competing for the Seligo Award. These will be handed out at the end of the festival on 6 April.
Three of the plays in the competition highlight Slovenian traumatic stereotypes, including Dane Zajc's poetic drama Jagababa (Baba Yaga), a production of SNG Drama Ljubljana, and Slavko Grum's "Dogodek v mestu Gogi" (The Event in the Town of Goga), staged by Slovensko Ljudsko gledalisce Celje.
The third play dealing with the theme is "Dolina solz, cez sto let bo vse za nami" (The Valley of Tears, All This Will be Behind Us in One Hundred Years), a compilation of four Slovenian plays from the last two hundred years, written by Tomaz Strucl and produced by the Glej theatre.
Political theatre is revived by four productions. Mestno Gledalisce Ptuj will stage Matej Bor's "Raztrganci - ucenci in ucitelji" (Ragged-People/Pupils and Teachers), while the home ensemble will perform Evald Flisar's "Akvarij" (Aquarium).
SNG Drama Ljubljana will also appear at the festival with its production of Ivan Cankar's "Romanticne duse" (Romantic Souls), and in a co-production "Slovensko narodno gledalisce" (Slovenian National Theatre), which portrays an actual incident of 2006 when a whole village demanded the eviction of a Roma family.
A co-production of the Nova Gorica theatre house and Gledalisce Koper, "Duohtar pod mus" (The Doctor in Spite of Himself), by Iztok Mlakar will provide for a comic relief among all those serious plays.
The accompanying programme will showcase five Slovenian productions and three Slovenian plays staged by foreign theatre companies.
