The visiting Montenegrin Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic announced on Thursday that Montengro would apply to become a member of the EU in the coming weeks, counting on Slovenia's support in the matter.
Montenegro has always felt the support of Slovenia, especially of its parliament, on its path towards Euroatlantic organisations, Krivokapic told the press after talks with his Slovenian counterpart France Cukjati.
"Slovenia is a special example, it is the country that started and pushed its way through, making it easier for other countries of the Western Balkans to follow," Krivokapic said.
The parliament speakers also discussed economic cooperation between the countries, focusing primarily on energy, roads and tourism.
"Slovenia considers Montenegro as a country of low investment risk," stressed Cukjati, explaining that trade between the countries amounted to EUR 200m in 2007, a figure equal to the amount of Slovenia's investment in Montenegro.
The pair also touched on developments in the Western Balkans, and the recognition of Kosovo. Krivokapic explained that Montenegro, which has already signed the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU, would follow the decision of the bloc.
"We will make the decision at the moment when we can best contribute to the stability of both the region and Montenegro," explained the Montenegrin parliament speaker.
Krivokapic is to continue his visit to the Slovenian parliament with a meeting with heads of deputy groups, while in the afternoon he is to be received by President Danilo Tuerk.
