Justice Minister Lovro Sturm and Parliament Speaker France Cukjati met in Ljubljana on Tuesday Cuban Justice Minister Maria Esther Reus, who is paying a working visit to Slovenia.
Sturm and Reus discussed the reduction of court backlogs and penal sanctions in the two countries, with Cukjati stressing that improving procedural law, IT and training were the key factors in reducing backlogs of pending bases.
Reus agreed with Sturm and emphasised that in Cuba a reform of penal procedures bore good results.
Sturm stressed the importance of alternative penal sanctions. He added that Slovenian law would be amended so that convicts could work for humanitarian organisations and local communities.
Sturm stressed the significance of human rights and said that Slovenian constitution recognised the right to human dignity and guaranteed freedom of speech.
Reus told the press that the meeting with Sturm was very beneficial and interesting. She said that Cuba would like to exchange views and cooperate with Slovenia in justice.
Speaker Cukjati meanwhile said that Reus's visit was a start of political communication, as there had been no direct cooperation with Cuba before.
He added that Slovenians were interested in Cuba as a tourist destination, but Slovenia would like to establish economic links and improve cooperation in technology and science as well.
Cukjati and Reus agreed that cooperation between counties was important, the parliament said in a press release.
