Slovenian Defence Minister Karl Erjavec and the visiting Swiss Defence Minister Samuel Schmid expressed a desire to boost cooperation in defence on Tuesday, with Schmid saying that the countries share numerous interests.
Erjavec told the press that he presented Schmid, the head of the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports, Slovenia's priorities in defence during its stint as EU president and reported on the February informal talks between EU defence ministers.
According to Erjavec, the pair also discussed the EU-led Althea operation in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the situation in Kosovo.
Touching on Monday's violent protests in Kosovska Mitrovica, Erjavec and Schmid agreed that Kosovo's stability must be ensured, a task that could be carried out by the NATO-led KFOR.
The ministers assessed bilateral cooperation as excellent, with Erjavec stressing cooperation in Alpine military training between the countries.
"Slovenia is getting ready to establish a centre for excellence for alpine military units, which we believe would be a great opportunity for cooperation".
Erjavec also assured Schmid Slovenia's full support in its capacity as EU president regarding agreements between Switzerland and the EU, mainly regarding cooperation with the European Defence Agency.
