The Slovenian police successfully investigated 43.3% of crimes registered in 2007, a 2.4% percentage point rise over 2006. The total number of crimes decreased by 2.4%, Police Commissioner Jo¾e Rom¹ek told the press.
"I'm proud of the Slovenian police," Rom¹ek said at the presentation of the report on policing in 2007.
He said that the police recorded 88,197 crimes in 2007, down from 90,354 the year before. However, the damages caused by crimes increased to EUR 265m from EUR 168m.
"Last year the police was mainly gearing up for Slovenia's entry to the Schengen border-free zone," Rom¹ek said and added that the police carried out all of the tasks necessary to secure a problem-free Schengen entry in December last year.
The police also carried out all of the necessary duties in securing the euro banknotes and coins as the country adopted the single European currency in January 2007.
The focus last year was on investigating white collar crime. While the number of such crimes dropped, the damages caused increased from an estimated EUR 86m in 2006 to EUR 106m.
Road safety meanwhile worsened last year, also because the number of registered vehicles increased by 4.2%. Also on the rise was the number of drunk drivers, the number of cases rising by nearly 8% to 27,937.
The Slovenian police employed 9,490 persons on 31 December 2007, 400 less than at the close of 2006. Rom¹ek said retirement was the main reason for the drop.
