Govt Adopts Judiciary Legislation Package

Ljubljana, 21 February

The government adopted on Thursday several laws from the area of judiciary, including the amendments to the attorneys act, the criminal procedure act and the bill on mediation in civil and business cases.

Justice Minister Lovro Sturm told the press after the session that the amendments to the attorneys act regulate the disciplinary procedure and set the attorney fees.
The amendments to the criminal procedure act aim to improve the efficiency of judicial procedures, the minister said.
The amendments change the composition of the Supreme Court senate in deciding on detention and introduce single treatment in pretrial criminal procedure by the police and a special team of prosecutors dedicated to fighting white collar crime, Sturm added.
Amendments to the criminal liability of legal entities act meanwhile allow courts to ban companies, if found guilty of corruption or similar crimes, from taking part in public calls for bids for the period between three to ten years.
The bill on mediation in civil and business matters is, according to Sturm, geared towards promoting the use of peaceful methods for solving disputes. It does not introduce mediation but merely brings solutions to boost the popularity of mediation, he said.
