The Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dimitrij Rupel and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Rangin Dadfar Spanta focused in their talks on Slovenia's contribution to the stability and reconstruction of Afghanistan. They concentrated on developments in the region, analysing the situation in Afghanistan and the influence exerted by Pakistan and Iran. Minister Rupel showed great interest in the democratisation of Afghanistan and assessed some developments, especially in education, as positive.
Minister Rupel assured his counterpart that Slovenia is actively contributing to the stabilisation and reconstruction of Afghanistan – Slovenian troops have been stationed there, as part of the international forces, since 2004. He stressed that Slovenia supports the strategic political-military plan for Afghanistan to be adopted by NATO at its Bucharest Summit with a view to empowering Afghanistan to manage security and stability by itself. Slovenia will continue cooperating with Afghanistan's military forces. Last year, for example, it increased the number of its troops there by 20 percent, total number of Slovenian soldiers in Afghanistan at the moment attaining 66. Slovenia also helps the Afghan army in kind, by donating weapons and equipment.
