Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Jankovic and Trieste Mayor Roberto Dipiazza committed to boosting cooperation between their cities in education and culture, tourism, public services and city planning as they met Monday in Trieste.
Cooperation between the two cities is expected to facilitate their access to EU funding and simplify projects related to city planning.
Jankovic and Dipiazza also want closer cooperation between the two cities' theatres and public service companies. The mayors want their tourist agencies to work together on new cross-border travel packages.
As Jankovic told the press after signing a letter of cooperation with Dipiazza, the possibility of exchanging information about the running of a city and cooperation between universities and sports institutions was what enticed him to accept the invitation of his Italian colleague.
Dipiazze, who sees a lot of potential for cooperation with Ljubljana, highlighted "excellent relations with the Slovenian community in the implementation of the [minority] protection law" and the importance of the recent abolition of the border between the two countries, which are now members of the Schengen zone. He believes that the growth of Ljubljana and Trieste will boost development throughout the region.
