Minister: KFOR Mission Vital for Stability of Kosovo

Vilnius, 7 February

Defence Minister Karl Erjavec opened on Thursday in Vilnius this year's first informal NATO ministerial, where NATO defence ministers agreed that the situation in Kosovo was very tense. Erjavec said that NATO's KFOR mission was vital for the stability of the region.

Erjavec said that KFOR guaranteed safe environment for all ethnic groups in the region. He told STA that a number of scenarios had been prepared in case the situation would worsen. However, he would not reveal any details of the scenarios as they were secret.
In his address, Erjavec stressed it was essential for a successful KFOR mission that the countries taking part in it remained unified and that NATO and the EU cooperated. Such cooperation would also be very important especially after an EU mission gets deployed to Kosovo.
He also stressed the importance of good relations between the local population and the military forces, which build trust.
The defence ministers also said today that NATO's mission to Afghanistan (ISAF) was a success. However, more detailed discussion regarding Afghanistan is to take place on Friday, the final day of the ministerial, when they are also to talk about cooperation with Russia.
The ministers are expected to discuss today cooperation between Ukraine and NATO, an important strategic link, according to Erjavec.
