Jansa Pays Tribute to Holocaust Victims
Prime Minister Janez Jansa paid tribute to the Holocaust victims on Sunday by saying that the tragic events from the past should serve as a lesson and reminder to be passed on to future generations.
"The Jewish tradition is an integral part of the European identity, while the fate this nation suffered during the second world war should serve as a lasting reminder and warning against extremist ideologies and the indifference that helped their expansion in the past," Jansa said in written statement on the International Holocaust Memorial Day.
Holocaust victims are being remembered on 27 January throughout Europe and world-wide. Jansa urged reverence for the millions of innocent people who had to die just because they were Jews, noting that the Holocaust was one of the gravest tragedies in Europe's history.
Condemning the National Socialist regime for inflicting the suffering, Jansa notes that the Jews, despite being involved in the shaping of the European future and having made a vital contribution to its modernity, fell victims to its darkest forces and the racist ideology, in which Slovenians had not been spared either.
