Brussels, 23 January

Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel met in Brussels on Wednesday Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, who said that the date when the province would proclaim its independence from Serbia would be announced soon

The pair would not go into detail about their meeting. "We discussed important issues. I learnt a lot, it is very important for the presidency to be as well informed as possible," Rupel told the press.
He added that since Slovenia took over the presidency of the EU, it was collecting information, which would be used as the basis for an appropriate strategy.
Thaci told the press that Kosovo was ready to build a democratic country and that it cooperated with the EU as well as the US.
He said he got confirmation that the plan for the recognition of independence by the West was on. "The people of Kosovo will be notified of the date soon."
According to plans revealed by diplomats, the US and major EU members would immediately recognise an independent Kosovo. This would be followed by recognition from other EU countries.
