Representatives of the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) met Transport Minister Radovan Zerjav in Ljubljana on Friday to discuss road transport, civil aviation, the railways, river and sea transport and dockworkers' issues. ETF officials said they wanted to ensure that the social aspects in transport would not be neglected during Slovenia's EU presidency.
ETF traditionally pays a visit on the Transport Minister of the next EU presiding state, said President of ETF Wilhelm Haberzetl at a press conference prior to the meeting. According to him, the meeting is very important in terms of maintaining social dialogue.
At the meeting, the ETF intends to present its views and voice its hopes for Slovenia during the country's presidency, said Haberzetl.
Meanwhile, ETF Secretary General Eduardo Chagas said after the meeting that talks broached on access to the international road haulage market as well the project of building a network of trucking rest areas and easing road permit rules.
The officials also discussed the advantages of transferring road cargo to the rivers, which provide for a much more environmentally-friendly mode of transport, and the upgrade of railway links between the Western Balkans and EU.
The ETF associates 225 trade unions from 14 countries. It represents 2.5 million workers in the transport industry.
