Demolition of Checkpoints Begins ahead of Schengen Expansion
With the day of Slovenia's entry into the Schengen border-free zone only two weeks away, the demolition of checkpoints on the border with Italy has already begun. The works on the Vrtojba/San Andrea border crossing, the biggest in the Gorisko region, kicked off on Thursday.
The Public Administration Ministry said that the first phase, which is to conclude on 21 December, the day of the Schengen zone expansion, would include the demolition of traffic lights and signs and the dismantling of gates on crossings with Italy, Austria and Hungary.
The second phase, in which all the remaining infrastructure will be torn down, is to conclude by the end of March 2008.
The demolition of all border crossings is to cost some EUR 2m, EUR 1.6m of which will come from the Transport Ministry, while the rest will be provided by the Public Administration Ministry.
