Parliament Adopts Accord on Adoptions with Macedonia

Ljubljana, 22 November

The parliament passed on Thursday an agreement with Macedonia regulating the adoption of children, the first such bilateral accord for Slovenia.

The agreement determines the conditions which will ensure that adoptions will benefit the children. It is designed to establish a system which will protect children and prevent kidnapings or trafficking.
Based on the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption, it was signed in Skopje on 27 February during Prime Minister Janez Jansa's visit there.
According to data by the Ministry of Labour, the Family and Social Affairs, between 20 and 40 children are adopted annually in Slovenia.
The government had been urged to sign the accord by a civic group for intercountry adoptions, which in May 2005 started collecting signatures for a special petition.
The group unites parents waiting to adopt a child; there are very few children available for adoption in Slovenia, which makes waiting periods several years long.
