EU Earmarks EUR 50.7M for Trieste-Divaca Rail Link

Brussels, 21 November

The European Commission on Wednesday tabled a proposal for the funding of priority projects on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) in the 2007-2013 period which includes EUR 50.7m for studies for the rail link between the Italian port city of Trieste and the Slovenian railway hub Divaca.

The Trieste-Divaca section is one of the priority projects on the fifth TEN-T corridor which stretches from Lyon in France to Divaca and proceeds through Ljubljana and Budapest to the border with Ukraine.
The Commission has proposed the disbursement of EUR 5.1bn for the entire transport network, of which over EUR 754m has been set aside for the railway line between Lyon and the Ukrainian border.
The Commission said that the Trieste-Divaca section is a good example of significant efforts regarding the studies, which it says are an indispensable part of the life-cycle of projects and therefore need to be given due attention.
The division of the money will be debated later today by the European Parliament's Transport and Tourism Committee.
