Education Minister Milan Zver attended a EU Education, Youth and Culture Council in Brussels on Friday, which focused on the young and their role in the Lisbon strategy. The implementation of the strategy is a key to improving the social status of young people, stressed the minister.
According to Zver, one of the priority tasks of Slovenia's EU presidency will be giving young people more say in all policy areas and putting youth issues on the agenda of the EU summit in March 2008, the ministry said in a press release.
Education ministers also discussed an all-round approach to youth policies and stressed the importance of developing youth policies, youth participation and cross-sector approach. They also adopted a document on voluntary activities of young people, which sets guidelines for development, promotion, facilitation and recognition of these activities.
Before the formal meeting, Zver also attended a meeting with young people, and has invited them to take part in various activities during Slovenia's EU presidency next year.
