Slovenian Film Receives Dialogue Prize at Cottbus Festival

Cottbus, 14 November

"Estrellita", a film directed by Metod Pevec, has been awarded at 17th Film Festival of East European Cinema in Cottbus with the prize of the Dialogue Jury. The five-day festival featured 80 films from 25 countries of Central and East Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus, and was visited by 17,000 people.

Estrellita was screened at the festival, which closed last weekend, out of the competition programme, but it received one of the awards competed for by all screened feature films.
The award jury said that Estrellita was "a film which tells a touching story about a young violinist and his female patron. The background story of the film is the environment and the way of life of Bosnian immigrants in Slovenia".
The film tells a story about a violin that brings together two families from completely different backgrounds. After the death of a famous violinist, his wealthy widow discovers he led a double life. Despite the opposition from her family and social prejudices, she gives his priceless violin to Amir, the talented son of an impoverished Bosnian couple.
After premiering in October, the film has already won several awards. Silva Cusin received best leading actress award at the recent Festival of Slovenian Film and a special mention of the jury at the Mannheim-Heidelberg international film festival.
Prior to Estrellita, Metod Pevec filmed two feature films - "Pod njenim oknom" (Beneath Her Window, 2003), which was Slovenia's candidate for the 2004 American Academy Award for best foreign film, and "Carmen" (1995).
