"Astrid the Star" Marks Famous Author's Centennial

Ljubljana, 13 November

Marjan Marinsek, Slovenian author and friend of children's author Astrid Lindgren, wrote a book about the famous Swedish author entitled "Zvezda Astrid" (Astrid the Star) to mark the centennial of her birth.

After publishing Lindgren's biography ten years ago, Marinsek decided to write about her family and her most successful book "Pippi Longstocking," the author told the press on Monday.
The first part of the book deals with Lindgren's family and the success of "Pippi Longstocking". The second part is written with a documentary approach. It starts off with her funeral and provides a historical overview of Sweden in the time of Lindgren's life (1907-2002).
He writes about Lindgren's complete body of work and pays special attention to ten of her most translated works and their characters, while describing Lindgren's fight for the environment, animals and world peace.
The book includes a number of photographs of the famous author, some of which were taken during his visits, and of Slovenia's biggest children's festival dedicated to Pippi Longstocking held annually in the town of Velenje.
Lindgren lived in her modest Stockholm flat and, in contrast to other famous Swedes, did not mind that tax office took most of her income. She protested only once, when she wrote an open letter to a Stockholm paper.
The letter included the story "Pomperipossa in Monismania", which was a very harsh attack against the government, and led to the defeat of the ruling party at the next elections, explained Swedish Ambassador John Hagard. The letter triggered an intensive public debate and led to changes in legislation.
