Organisers Say 70,000 People Taking Part in Rally

Ljubljana, 17 October

A mass rally staged by the trade unions has begun with a march towards the centre of Slovenia's capital. The organisers say up to 70,000 people are taking part in the protest calling for higher wages in Slovenia.

The event has been staged by all six trade union associations in Slovenia, with workers, students, pensioners and many other groups taking part.
The sound of whistling, jeering, drums and rattles are resonating around the main thoroughfare in Ljubljana as the protesters make their way to Kongressni trg, one of the main squares in the capital.
The president of one of the six trade unions confederations said as the protesters set out that the unions want a fairer distribution of company profits. Dusan Semolic of the Association of Free Trade Unions of Slovenia added that he hoped the crowd would convince the employers of the need for action.
The unions have been calling for higher wages in the face of high inflation and growing costs of living. The rally comes after several rounds of negotiations with employers have failed to make any progress.
