The 18th Ljubljana International Film Festival (LIFFe), the biggest event of its kind in Slovenia, will feature over 100 films from around the globe between 7 to 21 November. The festival will open with the independent US production "The Darjeeling Limited" by Wes Anderson.
Special attention will be given to national cinematographies and tributes to masters of contemporary film, LIFFe's new programme director Simon Popek told the press on Tuesday. Film lovers will have two full weeks to see the very best of world cinematographies packed into twelve programme sections according to type of film.
Among the programme sections there is "World Film Panorama", which features festival favourites from across the world, "Against the Wind" will offer delights from radical authors sailing against trends, while "Focus" will give film fans an insight into the independent silver screens of America and Romania.
A section called "Extravagance" will dive into the daring and titillating contents of diverse genres, whereas "Kings and Queens" will showcase works by distinguished and award-winning masters of contemporary film. The festival will also feature special "Retrospective" and "Tribute" sections, focusing on works of Roy Andresson, Otar Iosseliani and James Benning.
The films featured in the "Perspectives" section will compete for the Kingfisher Award, the main award of the festival. The selection of twelve titles, four of which were filmed by women directors, will be evaluated by an international jury, Popek said.
The jury will consist of Alexis A. Tioseco, editor of film portal Criticine.com, Enrico Chiesa, ex-head of the International Association of Art Cinemas (COICAE), and Andrej Blatnik, Slovenian writer and editor at the Cankarjeva zalozba publishing house.
Apart from the Kingfisher Award, LIFFe will give out three more awards - the Golden Reel audience award, a FIPRESCI prize and an Amnesty International Award for best human rights film.
For the first time in its history, the festival will take some of its films to Maribor, Slovenia's second largest city. With two screenings per day and 30 films in total, the programme in Maribor will feature one third of the total LIFFe programme.
