Slovenian Ambassador Runs Another Marathon for Mine Victims

Washington, 30 October

Slovenian Ambassador to the US Samuel Zbogar has completed the latest in a series of marathons as part of his fund raising campaign for the International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance (ITF). Zbogar has raised over US$ 65,000 for six Bosnian mine victims.

Zbogar completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington on Sunday in a time of 3 hours, 31 minutes and 7 seconds. This was his second marathon so far - he also ran 42 km in Cleveland - while he has also completed two half marathons (Knoxville and Austin) as part of his fund raising effort.
"I thought if I kept asking people to give me money, then I should do something very difficult on my side," Zbogar told the Washington Post after the Washington marathon.
The Slovenian diplomat was greeted at the finish line by several diplomats serving in Washington and four of the six Bosnian children whose treatment he is sponsoring. The four were also special guests at a reception held at the Slovenian Embassy in Washington on Monday.
The Slovenian-run ITF, which is one of the leading demining organisations in the region, has so far carried out projects involving mine clearance in the former Yugoslavia and Caucasus as well the rehabilitation of mine victims.
