Agricultural Minister Iztok Jarc wrapped up on Wednesday a working visit to Luxembourg, where he discussed with his counterpart Fernand Boden Slovenia's priorities for the agricultural sector during its stint at the helm of the EU in the first half of 2008.
Jarc said Luxembourg proved during its presidency in 2005 that a small country can also lead the bloc and contribute to EU's achievements, the Agriculture Ministry wrote in a press release on Thursday.
Jarc presented Slovenia's priorities for the presidency during the two-day visit, emphasised the significant revision of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and looked at Luxembourg's examples of best practice in agriculture.
Although the European Commission is determined to continue the CAP reform, the ministers agreed that the agricultural sector needs stability. The CAP should not undergo further reforms, instead the existing measures are to be improved.
Neither Luxembourg nor Slovenia support the proposed reductions of vineyard areas and the ban on the enrichment of wine through sucrose, since both countries do not contribute to the surplus of wine on EU markets and do not take distillation funds. According to the press release, Jarc and Boden agreed that the EU must put more emphasis on promotion and structural adjustments and introduce new technologies in the wine sector.
The most important discussion point for Luxembourg during Slovenia's presidency will be the milk quotas, which are likely to be abolished after 2014.
