PM: Reform Treaty Ratification Priority for Slovenia

Lisbon, 19 October

Prime Minister Janez Jansa announced on Friday that Slovenia's EU presidency in the first half of 2008 would focus on the ratification process for the new EU treaty, which was agreed by EU leaders early on Friday morning.

"As for ratification, Slovenia will strive to carry out the necessary formal procedures as soon as possible...to give a positive signal to the other member states" as the next presiding country, Jansa told the press.
It is important that Slovenia shows it is capable of ratifying the treaty in parliament "in real time", Jansa said, adding that it would be difficult to monitor the ratification process if Slovenia itself did not endorse the treaty. Jansa said that a lot of energy and effort would be invested in the monitoring of ratification across the 27-member bloc, but in terms of content the presidency would place more emphasis on preparations for the second cycle of the Lisbon Strategy.
