Slovenian and Macedonian Army Chiefs Discuss Cooperation

Ljubljana, 17 October

Chief-of-Staff of the Macedonian Armed Forces, Lt-Gen Albin Gutman, met on Wednesday his Macedonian counterpart, Lt-Gen Miroslav Stojanovski for talks on military cooperation.

Stojanovski told the press after the meeting that Macedonian and Slovenian armies were cooperating very closely in all areas, and that Macedonia's main objective was to get an invitation to NATO at the next summit of the alliance. Stojanovski was briefed on the situation in the Slovenian army and its further development, while the generals also discussed Slovenia's experience in crisis response operations and bilateral cooperation.
Gutman and Stojanovski pointed out that their armies had been cooperating since Slovenia's and Macedonia's independence. "Cooperation between the countries is very successful. Slovenia is supporting Macedonia's on its way to NATO, and is looking forward to a joint military exercise in the following months," said Gutman.
Stojanovski meanwhile assessed bilateral cooperation as "very good". According to him, the Macedonian army is facing many challenges, such as securing democracy in the country, fighting terrorism, establishing an operational defence system and the accession to NATO. "Slovenia's experience is very welcome in the process of Macedonia's accession to NATO and I hope that our cooperation will help us get an invitation at the NATO Summit in Bucharest in April 2008", said Stojanovski, expressing hope that the countries would soon cooperate in a peacekeeping mission.
